In most parts of Australia, Camellia japonica are better suited for semi shade to full shade locations. Although in cooler climate regions most japonica varieties will tolerate full sun conditions.
Camellia japonica varieties generally have larger flowers and larger leaves, the main flowering period being Winter through to Spring. The dense, glossy green foliage of the japonica varieties make it a very attractive screening plant.
The spectacular flowers provide colour in abundance to brighten up the dreary days of winter. The dark green glossy foliage are a contrast to the winter garden colours and are a favourite in cut flower arrangements.
